4 Easy Weight Loss Tricks Your Husband Knows (And You Don't)

We've all seen a movie where a bunch of guys are hanging out, shooting hoops and joking around. It plays to every manly stereotype, and yet it's very telling. The truth is, guys handle fitness with a casualness I envy. They like to have fun, spend time with friends—and hey, it seems to work. They pretty much always lose weight, often without all the stress. Here are some refreshingly straightforward weight loss strategies I've learned from men in my life.

You Should Want to Be Your Best

I've always been very competitive, and I don't think women are taught as often as men to embrace it. My longtime trainer, Steve Lee (he's the guy shooting hoops with me here!), has really helped me channel that energy—and not just toward other people. He's constantly pushing me to challenge myself, too: The second I get good at something, we move on. It's made me a better athlete and pushed me to want more from every other aspect of my life, including my career.

Life's Too Short For Boring Workouts

When Dave and I first got married, the gym felt more like a punishment than something I could ever enjoy. He suggested I try playing racquetball with him, and since I had nothing to lose (and he's fun to hang out with), I said yes. It was a game changer. I realized that while I was slaving away on the elliptical—because that's what fit people do, right?—Dave had been getting a killer workout doing something he loved. It's a lesson I carry with me to this day: I have options.

Be Pragmatic About Your Body

Weight loss tips
Like so many women, I used to care a lot about what other people thought of my body. Don't get me wrong, there are guys who care too. But a lot of the men I know—even actors, whose looks help them get work—seem more removed from that. They take care of their bodies the way they take care of their cars: They keep them polished because they take pride in them. And if they start to feel sluggish, they think about what they've been using for fuel. It's all so practical.

Make Yourself a Priority

Weight loss tips
That thing you feel every time you have to choose between going for a run or putting in an extra hour at work? It'sguilt. And I just don't think men experience it the same way. I know guys who surf, for example. They wake up at the crack of dawn to hit the waves. It doesn't matter if they have a big meeting to prep for that morning, or if they had to turn down a late dinner the night before—they're out there. It's admirable. Imagine what you could do if you put yourself first.Resource: redbookmag.com
